We asked three companies, Magic Lantern Limited, Transom Technologies and Liquid Light Studios, to describe how they are utilizing animation in unexpected places and for unexpected purposes. “An animator is an actor with a pencil”, goes the oldest and truest animation cliché. Not “a draftsman that acts”, but first and foremost - an actor. It’s rather funny to imagine a cameraman standing in front of a computer screen with his equipment, zooming in to try to capture the animation playing on the screen. Fortunately for the entertainment industry, however, that’s hardly what happens; however, even when working in three-dimensional computer animation, you still need a camera to film your animation. You’ve seen it more than once: computer generated images moving across your screen with eerie fluidity, peopling your movies, your video games, with motion and inflection so detailed that it’s almost unreal. It can seem like magic, a sort of digital wizardry too far beyond anything man-made. The idea of animators working to impart that level of minute detail and realism to an animated humanoid figure is almost staggering, and can look like an impossible amount of effort. (阅读全文……)

Speed Racer was a staple of my childhood, notorious for its mixture of high-octane action, varying animation quality, and pure, unadulterated cheese. It’s a classic, and it’s now following the tradition of many classics such as Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: it’s being remade for a new generation, using new animation technology and new storylines.
